Willem Hekma Scribe post

We first looked at our classmate's science fair work.

  1. Finish Science Fair (25 minutes)
    1. Complete your document.  Check your grades.
    2. Clean up any materials leftover from the Science Fair.
  2. Water Issues: Pacific Trash Vortex & Fishing by Compressor Diving (55 minutes)
Content: Students will
  • Describe how our interaction with our environment affects the environment and us.
Skills:
  • Finding information within texts and videos.

We saw a video that was about people diving to go fishing with special swim suits that is shown below.

Pacific Trash Vortex/Commpressor Diving and The Science Fair

Here you will have to write a summery of the article and if you do not finish it is homework.

  1. Why is it a problem?
  2. Explain the cause of the problem and science related to the problem.
  3. Explain what people are doing to solve the problem.
  4. Explain how nature acts to solve the problem (challenge).
  5. Explain & discuss other ways to solve the problem in the future.

1) Why is it a problem?
  1. Too few fish - we have fished so much that there are far fewer fish.
  2. So fisherman have to use different techniques such as compressor diving.  Compressor diving is extremely dangerous.

Explain the cause of the problem and science related to the problem.
  1. The area is overfished
The fish don’t have time to reproduce.  Have to understand science of reproduction.
  1. They don’t have the money to afford safe diving equipment.   Understand the science of pressure and decompression sickness

Explain what people are doing to solve the problem.
  1. Nothing, they are going deeper to find more fish.
    1. They could use nets that allow smaller fish to escape.
  2. Not much

Explain how nature acts to solve the problem (challenge).
  1. Nature constantly reproduces and balances change to ecosystems.  But it’s difficult for the coral reef to keep producing fish if every time it’s fished 50% of the fish are taken.
  2. ---

Explain & discuss other ways to solve the problem in the future.
  • Have restrictions on times to fish.
  • Have parks where no fishing is allowed.
  • Have laws that limit the amount of fish/seafood you can take.
    • Have the infrastructure and officers to enforce restrictions and laws.
    • Fish hatcheries to help grow small fish and then release them.
    • Fish farms
Donate equipment to the fishermen.
Educate the fishermen.
Government or NGOs could help them find other jobs.

  2. Willem your post is good, but it is a bit confusing, When you wrote about how we watched a video about people diving in specials suits, what we actually did was that we watched a video about compressor diving. You should ask Mr. Pro for the video and you should correct your post. You should also correct the statement when you talk about the special suit diving.
