Conclusion and student led conference!

In the beginning of the class, we put our template on the the science folder.

Here’s an example of a completed conclusion:
As the time the water was heated increased, the temperature of the water increased.  The results support the hypothesis.  Every time the time increased the temperature also increased.

Your conclusion should have at least three parts.
In the first part, you must correctly describe the relationship between the independent variable and dependent variable indicated by the trend in the processed data.

Write “As ____IV___ increased, ___DV____ increased/decreased/stayed the same.”

The trend in the data tells us how the independent variable (IV) relates to the dependent variable (DV). There are three possible relationship we’ll look at in Science 7:
  • increased,
  • decreased or
  • stayed the same.

Conclusion Sentence Example
Time Heated vs Temperature for a Pot of Water

Stretch Length of an Elastic vs Distance the Elastic Traveled

Increased

Increased

As the time the water was heated increased, the temperature of the water increased.

As the length the elastic was stretch increased, the distance the elastic traveled increased.

Time Air is Let of a Ball vs Height the Ball Bounced Back

Time Air is Let of a Ball vs Height the Ball Bounced Back

Decreased

Decreased

As time that air was let out of the ball increased, the height the ball bounced back decreased.

AAs time that air was let out of the ball increased, the height the ball bounced back decreased.

Time Spent Studying vs Test Results

Stays the same

As time spent studying increased, the test result stayed the same.

In the second and third parts, correctly compares trend in the processed data to the hypothesis.

  • Write “The results support/do not support the hypothesis”.
  • Use processed data to support your conclusions.

Hypothesis:
As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable should increase/decrease.

Conclusion Sentence Example

As the time the water was heated increased, the temperature of the water should increase.
Time Heated vs Temperature for a Pot of Water
The results support the hypothesis.

Every time the time increased the temperature also increased.
As the length the elastic was stretch increased, the distance the elastic traveled should increase.
Stretch Length of an Elastic vs Distance the Elastic Traveled
The results support the hypothesis.

For many points, the distance decreased when the the elastic was stretched more.  However, the overall trend was for the distance to increase from around 1 meter at a stretch of 10 cm to a distance of over 7m for a stretch around 44 cm.

Here are some examples of conclusions that students did:

- Rocket investigation: "As the amount of water increased, the height of the rocket increased. The results of the water rocket supports the hypothesis. Every time the water increases, the rocket also increased.
- Elastic investigation: "As the elastic stretch increases, the distance traveled by the rubber band increases. Furthermore, the results support the hypothesis. Despite the fact that we increased the stretch by the same amount at every new stretch, though, the travel distance did not increase by the same amount at every stretch.
- Ball bounce investigation: "As the time that the air was let out of the ball increased, the height that the ball bounced to decrease. The results supported my hypothesis. In the data, each point went down, which represents that the height decreased."

For the rest of class, we worked on our student led conference.
